So I recently slid into the DMs of one of my favourite authors asking if we could do a sort of interview, totally casual I would send her the questions and she could respond when she had time and a couple of days later I had her email with her answers and I am smiling like a loon.
So, who is the author? If you follow my social media, you will know my favourite author is Kinsley Kincaid, the Queen of taboo romance!
Let’s jump straight into these questions.
So, Miss Kinsley, what made you want to write books?
A friend who no longer writes anymore encouraged me. I would help her plot, or she would talk things through with me, as a sounding board. Then one day, she said I should do it.
I laughed, I made up a wild idea, as a joke and said sure I’ll get right on that. And left it at that… until I didn’t. The idea of writing a book continued to swirl in my mind and I finally said, fuck it, ok, I’ll do. And I wrote Let’s Play that October nearly three years ago and released it as a freebie on January 5.
Then the joke idea I had was released the following year, Ghost Dick.
Ghost Dick is one of my favourite Kinsley books, heck it’s one of my favourite books! It’s hilarious, spicy, wholesome and taboo. I think I love it even more knowing it was a joke idea.
I’ve always been curious if you outline a plot before you write, or do you sit down and let the words flow?
Generally, I have an idea of how it’s going to end. But no clue how we are going to get there. I will write down notes before and throughout the process, because thoughts always come to me before bed. Going into it, though, I only have a book title, character names and the endings known.
Do you incorporate your life experiences into your book in any way?
I have sort of. Maybe?
Mental health is something I live with daily, so when possible, I love including it to bring more awareness and to remove the stigma around it.
The story and characters dictate to me, and I just type the words.
But if I have an opportunity to make something like Old English Victorian Gothic in a book, I absolutely will.
And no, I have never fucked a ghost.
But I do want to own pigs now. It will never happen, but a girl can dream.
One of the things I loved the most about Kinsley’s book Wrecked was the mental health representation. As someone who has struggled badly with depression and anxiety since the age of 14, it felt good to be seen, especially because she still found love in that book (it was her cousin, but still, it was hot!)
We see Old English Victorian Gothic in the Devil’s Society series, and I love it!
Still find it hilarious that Kins confirmed in her book Ghost Dick that she had in fact not fucked a ghost, but like she says a girl can dream ;).
Also, Kins, what would you be feeding your pigs? Hopefully not the same food as Elijah?
I know you have a day job, is it related to writing?
The day job is the opposite of this life. But my boss and select co-workers know and support my writing, which makes me smile.
With a day job, how do you find the time to write?
Evenings and weekends. I normally take Friday evenings off to decompress from the work week, head to pilates, then jump into author land first thing Saturday morning. And I book editing for the year months and months out, this helps to hold me accountable; knowing I have a deadline, self-imposed or not, it helps my drive.
I absolutely love this level of commitment. If I’m not reading a book, I am probably scrolling my phone while looking like a sloth on a Saturday.
What’s your favourite book you have written, and who is your favourite character to write?
I can’t say yet, but the book is written and I am so fucking proud of it. But I love all my books, just this one hits differently. I love my females, Iris, Rylee and Sid. And our PIMP Greta!
Greta is the GOAT! She makes me laugh so freaking much! Merrick will always be one of my favourites, along with Elijah 😍 oh and Dex! I want to bundle him up and protect him.
How long does the process usually take you from thinking of a story to writing it and then publishing it?
I can think of a story and not be able to get to it for a year. So I make notes when things come to me, something to reference when the time comes.
Pen to paper, 6 weeks. I work best under pressure; it’s when I thrive.
Wow! 6 weeks is amazing.
Are you a big reader, and have you always been interested in reading?
Yes! I read three dark fantasy books this week. And I loved it. But truthfully, since I started writing, I barely read anymore. Before those three books, it had been a year since I picked up anything. Before that, I was doing 300 books a year. I read fast and binge hard!
300 books a year, hot damn! I need to up my reading game 😝
What authors inspire you?
Amo Jones. She goes where the story takes her and doesn’t give a fuck.
LJ Shen, KV Rose, Nikki St. Crowe, Leigh Rivers, Sara Cate, Santana Knox, Harley Laroux, Elle Kennedy.
So many, from all genres!
But also, Taylor Swift.
Truly.
Her business model and how she has conducted and structured her business is truly inspiring. On Top of her creative abilities, of course! And she is just a good person, and I feel, at the end of that day, that’s what matters. Be kind to people. Treat others as you desire to be treated. While also being strong, independent, appreciative, with healthy boundaries.
That right there is said perfectly. I agree you should always be kind to others. I can say from experience that this isn’t Kinsley just saying this either. Every time we have spoken, she has been the sweetest, kindest person ever. I was lucky enough to meet Kinsley at a signing event in 2024, and she was so lovely, she truly sees you!

Do you have any autobuy authors?
I did when I read more. But all the folks listed above are decorating my bookshelf.
Kinsley is one of my autobuy authors, along with Harleigh Beck.
What genres do you read?
Contemp. Sports Romance. Rom Com. Dark Romance. Dark Retellings. Dark Paranormal. And recently, Dark Fantasy, which I am loving! If it hooks me after the first couple of chapters, I will read it.
You’re the Queen of taboo dark romance and horror. Do you think you will ever write a different genre?
I love and appreciate this title that you and others have gifted me. Even if I think y’all are wild and out of hand in thinking I am of such a stature – lol. I will stay in the dark world, but definitely venture into different subgenres.
You can think we are wild, Kinsley, but we just say the truth 😄 Kinsley never misses with her books, and that is why she is the Queen.
Do your friends and family read your books?
Yes, friends do! Family knows and they support, but don’t read it. Unless it’s my mother-in-law, she devours it.
I actually love that the MIL devours your books! My in-laws know I read, but they have no idea what I read. My mum just asks if I’m reading smutty books again 😂 none of them are readers though, so they don’t get it.
What does it feel like when someone loves your work?
It’s an out-of-body experience. It brings me great joy and happiness, and I’m truly honored, but at the time, I can’t believe this is my life. That folks are taking the time to read my words and are enjoying them. It’s wild!
What hobbies do you have other than writing?
I binge-watch TV shows. Chill with my cats. Go to Pilates. Chill outside in the summer. And hang out with my niece and nephew. Listen to music. And travelling!
Travelling….hopefully back to England one day 🙃
What’s the worst part about being an author?
When someone tags you in a bad review, it gets in your head and brings self-doubt for the day. It’s just annoying. I don’t go on Goodreads, and unless I am tagged, I don’t see reviews.
I’ll never understand why people tag authors in bad reviews; it’s just not nice.
What’s the best part about being an author?
I love sharing my chaotic mind with you all! And seeing your excitement for something I am working on only motivates me more!
I love this!
What other authors are you friends with, and did you meet through being an author?
NJ Weeks is one of my besties. We met after we both published! Mila Crawford is another dear friend of mine. She knew me prior to authoring, and I didn’t tell her I was writing until she realized it was me. And we are both Canadian, heck yes – haha. I kept my adventure into author land very hush-hush. I wanted to prove to myself I could do it before telling people. And there are others that I know if I were to DM, they would reply, but I am also an introvert, so being super social can be a lot for me.
As a fellow introvert, I totally get it! I come across as so awkward in messages at times 😂 I haven’t read anything by these two, but I have heard of them, I need to add them to my TBR.
What would you advise someone who wants to write their own book?
Write it.
Do you usually have a few projects on the go at once, or do you start a book and see that through to the end before starting another?
I have multiple ideas in my brain at a time, but I only write one book at a time.
Have you got stories written that you’ve never published?
No, I don’t think so. I have ideas not published. But everything written is out or is coming out.
Do you want to become a full-time writer?
Yes. Life Goals! It would be an honor and a dream come true.
Love this! I hope it comes true ☺️
How do you choose the names of your characters, and which is your favourite name so far?
I go through names in my head or on Google. And if I feel like a name fits them, I use it. I have a few names I am dying to use, but they haven’t fit the character yet.
Kinda like naming a kid or a pet lol.
What is researching for your books like?
Depends. Some, I just go with the flow.
I watch a lot of true crime.
I will Google how certain antique torture tools are used, absolutely. Because my stories are all based in America, I do location research so I get the scenery and aesthetics correct.
Others may entail a deeper dive.
Unholy, I was constantly in Trash Taco’s DM’s asking questions and ensuring what I was writing was honoring the Domme community. And that Rylee’s story was being accurately described and told in every aspect when it came to her Domme side. Taco also provided me with links, which I read through. And she also did the final read-through. She is a wealth of knowledge and I absolutely adore her! With that said… it all depends on what the story is, to the amount of research done.
I have also looked at the antique torture tools that Kinsley writes about and…wow is all I can say. I am glad that I am not in the Devil’s Society series…Judas Cradle, anyone?
Thank you so much, Kinsley, for answering my never-ending questions. I am so grateful to you for finding the time to answer questions for my very new, very amateur blog. You are a Queen! I love you.
