Desperate Run by C.J. Riggs & M.L. Burns

Desperate Run is an Erotic Horror that follows Max and Draven. Max applies to the Midnight Menagerie, where she is to be hunted and scared shitless for the weekend. She must make it through all the mazes to be made the winner, in which she is granted whatever her heart desires. Draven is a hunter at the menagerie and when he sees Max, he becomes obsessed. He picks her as his prey but will he let go when the weekend is over?
Do you know why I don’t call you beautiful, but instead, perfect, Max?
It’s because beauty is comparable, where you are not. You are my version of perfection, which no one can compare to.

A reminder to you, and warning to those that will hurt you, even with their words. Death is all that awaits them.
I had seen all my friends reading this book when it first came out. I had read No for an Answer by C.J. Riggs and knew I wanted to read this. As so often happens, it got lost in my never-ending TBR pile. Since I am going to AATA in October and meeting C.J. Riggs, I was reminded to read this book. I am so glad I was reminded and also super pissed at myself for waiting so long to read it. I enjoyed every minute of this book.
I took a break partway through to read Tulisa’s book, because well, it’s Tulisa, so obviously I dropped everything. The day after I finished Tulisa’s book, I was straight back on reading this. I loved the idea of this scary carnival type attraction, with mazes and hunters. Draven was mysterious, yet sexy, hard yet soft. I enjoyed his character a lot.
Max has been through so much trauma, which is what brings her to the menagerie, and I just want to be there for her. This book is an erotic horror, so obviously it’s not a sweet love story, but the fact that Draven had been through so much trauma and closed his heart off. Max had been through so much trauma and closed herself off; she came to the menagerie to get her wish, which would give her revenge. Yet she got so much more; the two of them find each other and help each other heal. I thought it was beautiful.
I’ll provide you a loaded gun to end my life, because death is the only thing that will separate me from you.
This book had me sobbing at about 90% of the way through, and my husband was laughing at me! I did not expect it to make me cry, but boy, did it! It also made me laugh. It has a HEA, and I just loved it so much. That epilogue scene 🥵
The book is written in dual POV, and it’s cool that M.L. Burns wrote Draven and C.J. Riggs wrote Max. It’s also the first book I’ve read by M.L. Burns, but I will 100% be reading more. There are also Spotify playlists for both characters, which is a nice touch.
