Lucky 14 by Alina May

Lucky 14 is book three in the Hunter’s Club series; they don’t have to be read in order. You will understand the side characters if you do, though. Lucky 14 follows Holli Oakley, Kyan & Wyatt. Holli, a therapist, has been kidnapped and brought to an Island with 30 other people. She has to survive for 14 days, whilst being hunted. Oakley is the reason Holli has been brought to the Island. He didn’t realise when he signed up and put Holli’s name down that he would be required to hunt and kill. Now Oakley needs to save himself & Holli. Kyan doesn’t know what is going on, but something strange is happening on the island, and now Oakley wants his help to save Holli, and Kyan can’t say no; they have a way of looking inside his soul and seeing things he doesn’t want them to see. Wyatt is the game master, and wants to know who has snuck people into his game. Who is trying to tear down everything he has built? He will find out, even if it means no one survives the game.
Anger makes me tighten my fist. Not good enough to take part in their bullshit little club? I’ll show her. “I can handle it.” “You won’t even fight for your…” she hesitates, “partner. What makes you think you can handle this?” “Fight for her? I’d kill for her!” The words come out in an angry burst, but I realize I meant every word. I’d kill for Poppy.

I always try to sign up for Alina’s ARCs, because I have yet to read a bad book by her. I think every book I have read has been a 5-star read, and she is an autobuy author. I read Ready, or Not in 2024, which is book 2 in the Hunters Club series. I’m yet to read book one, which is Wanna Play a Game? I have it on my shelf…I need to read it sooner rather than later. Anyway, this is about Lucky 14 Letty, not the others, geez.
This is a very Hunger Games-esque book. Holli is dropped on an Island where she is being hunted by masked killers. Oakley has signed Holli up, without knowing what he was signing her up for. All Oakley wanted was to take out whoever was between him and his girlfriend, Poppy. In his eyes, Holli, Poppy’s therapist, is the person who is coming between them. Oakley arrives on the Island not knowing why he is there, or that he has brought Holli here too. He is even more shocked to see Kyan, whom he met in the club bathroom. Kyan is drawn to Oakley, and the two of them end up forming a relationship. Well, Kyan pushes himself onto Oakley, who falls for Kyan. Wyatt keeps the games in order, which means he keeps the hunters in order.
I really liked all of the characters in this book. Holli is rather reserved, a therapist who is also a bit of a people pleaser. She really comes into herself when she is forced to fight for her life. She tries to look at things very logically. I liked Holli. Oakley is an anxious person who keeps track of patterns in people’s behaviours. He does whatever he can to stop people from leaving him. I wanted to scoop Oakley up and tell him that he deserves to be loved. Kyan solves all of his problems with alcohol and drugs, which is not the best way to deal with your problems, but everyone who has been through trauma finds a crutch in something. I liked the playfulness of Kyan. Wyatt is very serious, dominating and caveman-esque. He had faced so much trauma in his life that I just wanted to hug him, even though he would probably throw me off a cliff if I tried, haha.
“Good. The cat has the mouse. Now I’m gonna get the fox too.”
The book is set on an Island, there is a “hotel” type place where all the hunters stay, and then the “prey” are all left to survive in the forest. If they weren’t fighting for their lives, it would be a very beautiful setting, I’m sure, haha. It is a perfect setting for the story.
I really enjoyed the writing style, as I said, I love Alina’s books. They always have me immersed. I felt a strong connection to the characters and to the plot. There is a big twist in this book, and I didn’t see it coming. I knew something was going on and was trying to figure it out. I honestly felt like I was there with the characters in this book. I wanted to cry for them and protect them from their past. This is why I like Alina’s books so much: the characters become real for me. The book flowed well and was easy to follow.
Overall thoughts:
I fucking loved this, every minute of it was amazing. I loved the writing, the characters and the plot. The spice was hot, the action was gripping, and the romance was swoon-worthy. I highly recommend this book and Alina as an author to anyone who likes their books on the dark side.
Thank you, Alina, for the ARC.
