Explore the World of Fantasy with Mariah Montoya in this exclusive Interview

I’m not sure if you’re all aware, but this year I discovered one of my all-time favourite fantasy series, thanks to my wonderful friend Roni, who recommended it to me. This was not only a new series but a new author to me. One who has now become an auto-buy author! So I decided to pull up my big girl pants and slide my behind into her DMs to ask if she would be down for an interview. I was so nervous, but when she replied saying yes…guys, I felt so giddy!! I mean, the title has given away who it is already, but I’m so super happy to have the wonderful Mariah Montoya on my blog 🙂 By the Orchid and the Owl may be one of my all-time favourite fantasy worlds!

So let’s get to it!

I can be quite a generous rater. I think I will do a post at the end of the year/beginning of next year, going over the books I read in 2025 and what I rated them and if I would change that rating or not.

Queens of Ruin is a 114-page novella which follows Elaura, who is mixed race; she is half human, half alien. Her mother is one of the Queens ruling the earth, who came here after the Earth suffered from a plague that killed over half of the humans. The alien queens brought with them salvation, medicine and technology for the humans’ survival, so long as they could rule. Once a woman turns 25, she is to go to a marriage ceremony where they are looked at to see if she is fertile. If she is, she is put into an arranged marriage with 3 males; the goal is for her to produce as many offspring as possible to repopulate the Earth. They do not get a say in the marriage, and must do as they are told or be kept prisoner for treason. Elaura, although the daughter of a Queen, hates the way things are done; little did she know her husbands also share the same hate for the Queens. They, along with the rest of the rebellion, fight for their freedom.

Blood & Throttle: A Dystopian Death Race of Love and Survival

Blood & Throttle by Nova Kane

18+ Contains Adult Content

I started November off strong with my first ARC of the month, Blood & Throttle, which follows Sienna ‘Sin’ Vega and Riot Carter. This book is set in the future in a dystopian world, where the streets run red with bloodshed in The Gauntlet, a brutal death race. There are no rules in the gauntlet; you win or you die. Sienna is forced into the gauntlet to pay for a crime she is being framed for. She has a chance of freedom by winning, but Sienna doesn’t submit, and the men in the gauntlet don’t like that. She has a target painted on her back, a busted-up motorbike, and sheer stubbornness to make it to the finish line. Riot Carter is the reigning champ, the legend known as the Reaper. He’s got the fastest bike and is a weapon in his own right. Riot doesn’t care for other racers, but when he sees Sienna, he knows she is different, and he claims her as his. It becomes a full-time job trying to protect her, a job that puts a target on his back too. Blood & Throttle is being released on 12th November and is available for pre-order now.

Love, Loss and Laughter in Jamie Applegate Hunter’s Tragically Yours

Tragically Yours by Jamie Applegate Hunter

“Tragically Yours is a dual POV standalone fantasy romance with a romance-heavy plot & simple world building. It is a fast-paced, easy read.”

Tragically Yours is book 3 in Jamie’s Fae Kings of Eden series; they are all standalones that can be read in any order, though. This book follows Dean, who is the fae Prince and then later on the King of the Garden Kingdom, and Fawn, who is half human, half fae. Dean is a full bloodied fae and a royal one at that. On the 13th birthday, the royal fae are whispered the name of their mate. There mate who will have been born on the same day as him, traditionally, royals find their mates at 13 and bring them straight to their kingdom to keep them safe. Dean, however, cannot find his mate; he can feel her through the bond until the bond goes silent. His father then delivers the news of her death.

Breaking the Cardinal Rules: A Review of Xantera by Mariah Montoya and Grace Pearce

Xantera by Mariah Montoya and Grace Pearce

Xantera follows 23-year-old Saskia, who lives in a utopian society ruled by 12 guardians. Saskia has always been taught to never question the rules and to fear the monster who prowls outside the wall, which is there to protect them. She eats what she is told, she works where she is told, and she is even in a relationship with whom she is told. They control every aspect of the citizens’ lives. Saskia is a healer, and when one of her patients is acting shifty and then disappears, Saskia does what no one in Xantera should do: she starts thinking and asking questions. When she sees her patient again, he is being escorted by the sentries, but she notices as he throws a necklace to the side of the road. Saskia is curious and picks this up; she doesn’t know what it is and is utterly shocked when a voice speaks to her in her head. The voice is that of the monster outside the wall, the one she should fear, and he wants her to let him in.

Enemies to Lovers: Finding Love in By the Moonbeam and the Mist

By the Moonbeam and the Mist by Mariah Montoya

This is book 2 in the Esholian Institute series. I’m not sure yet how many books will be in this series, but by the end of this book, there is at least one more to come.

By the Moonbeam and the Mist follows on where book one, By the Orchid and the Owl, ended. Coen and the other faeries have fled; they have wiped Rayna’s mind, and she wakes up on the beach with Jagaros, thinking she partied the night before and is drunk/hungover. This book is set in Rayna’s second year at the institute, and because her mind was wiped, she doesn’t remember Coen, she doesn’t remember the truth about who she is. She ends up finding all of this out again. In this book, she is tasked with finding and catching Coen. Coen has changed, though; he is faster than he should be, and he moves with impeccable speed. Rayna plans to capture him, until she realises that a force is destroying the villages and residents in them. A force that is not Coen, if she is to protect her dads and her friends, she must team up with Coen.
