Myers is a dark, taboo retelling of Michael Myers from the popular and, in my personal opinion, amazing Halloween films. This book follows Damien King, a 12-year-old boy who lives with his stepsister Samantha after his mother passes away. Samantha babysits Trixie long term, in that she pretty much lives there full time. Trixie is 4 years old and gets ignored by Samantha, so Damien looks after her and protects her. On Halloween night, Damien takes Trixie trick or treating. What starts as a cute night of trick or treating ends with sixteen people dead and a 12 year old boy covered in blood holding a 4 year old child in his arms. Trixie gets taken away from Damien and he spends his time between prison and the psych hospital, until he escapes and makes his way back to Chippewa Falls to reclaim what is his and destroy all those who took her from him.
I try to remind myself that babies are like dogs. They love you as long as you’re the one feeding them.

Don’t fucking touch her. No one touches her.
You’re probably sick of hearing me mention my reading slump, but I have been in a slump lol. I read 2 ARCs and could feel myself slipping back into the slump. I sat scrolling on my Kindle for ages and I saw Myers on there. I couldn’t remember buying it but I love the Halloween films, so it’s no surprise that I had seen it and bought it. I thought, sod it, it’s a novella, let’s give it a go.
Like I said, I love the Halloween films. Nothing in the plot of this book surprised me because I have watched the Halloween films every year since I was a teenager, it’s a retelling, it’s going to be along the same lines as the film, obviously. Even though I knew roughly the way the book was going to play out, I still enjoyed every minute of reading it. When it comes to dark romance and erotic horrors, I feel like the morally black MCs need a redeeming factor. Damien had that; the poor boy had gone through so much trauma that he snapped. The only person who was ever there for him was a 4 year old little girl. Damien took everything that was thrown at him but he would not let anyone hurt Trixie and when they did, he lost it. Obviously, in the real world, your trauma is not an excuse for killing but in books it is.
No one makes her cry
At first, I kind of struggled with the fact that he was her caregiver when she was 4 and then he sexually wanted her when she was older, but obviously, he hasn’t seen her in 14 years, and he didn’t want her in that way when she was a minor. He just wanted to protect her against Samantha and the bullies.
Tonight I will fix everything and anyone who tries to get in my way will see what happens when they come between me and ending the torment forever.
I liked Trixie, I did think the ending was slightly odd, I know she loves Damien and her soul recognises him as the person who was there for her, but turning her back on the person who has brought her up and given her a good life for 14 years was a bit of a curveball. I would have thought she would have grown attached to them and understood why they did what they did. That was really the only part I wasn’t fond of.
He releases my lips for a moment to smirk at me. “My pretty little dead girl has some dirty deeds of her own.” I smiled at him. “You haven’t seen anything yet.”
The spice was good, there wasn’t too much but what was there fit well with the story. Like I said, I really enjoyed this and I look forward to reading more from Zepphora.
